The data for this study was retrieved from 3 international web-based databases, i.e., Ei COMPENDEX (1990-2001), lEL (lEE/IEEE Electronic Library) (1988-2001), and INSPEC (1969-2001). The process of data collection involved downloading all bibliographic records of Malaysian authors, according to the fields of Author Affiliations in COMPENDEX and Institution in INSPEC as reflected by the affiliation status of only the first author, and restricting the year of publication between 1990 and 1999. Duphcate records were verified and eliminated. Malaysian Research and Development Classification System (MRDCS) (1998) produced by the Malaysian Science and Technology hiformation Centre (MASTIC) was applied when identifying research subjects. Bibliometric analysis, by means of the
Bibliometrics Toolbox (Version 1.4) developed by TA. Brooks in 1987, and regression analysis were employed to show and determine the trend and character of the literatures collected. A total of 461 publications, which consisted of 263 (571%) conference papers, 197 (42.7%) journal articles and 1 (0.2%) monographs chapters were contributed between 1990 and 1999. According to each annual amount of contributions, Malaysian research publication productivity averaged 46.1 per annum, which begun slowly between 1990 and 1993 (90, 19.5%) followed by rapid growth between 1994 and 1999 (371, 80.5%) publications. An upward trend for both annual and cumulative total of publication production was expected to continue in the future. However, the negative effect of the age of research groups on productivity must be seriously noted as a decline was indicated in 1999. A total of 547 unique Malaysian authors contributed the 461 publications in computer science and information technology during 1990 to 1999. This figure made up 0.6 per cent of the total number of 87, 000 IT workers in Malaysia by the end of 1998 {Mid-Term Review of the Seventh Malaysia Plan 1996-2000, 1999). Each author shared an average of 0.84 publications. Less than one third of the 547 authors contributed two or more papers/articles and the majority were one time contributors. Malaysian authors in this field had various interests of research, publication in a wide variety of subject areas, indicating a varied and broad research interests. The productive author’s position is fould to be corelated to their publication productivity. The three most productive institutions in this field were Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia and Universiti Malaya. [brace not closed] Repository Staff Only: item control page
