Abstract

CoPAS is an expert system adviser that aims to educate novice cataloguers in creating bibliographic descriptions for nine types of published conference proceedings. The authoring tool used is Asymetrix Toolbook II. The usefulness of the CD-based runtime system as a computer assisted instruction tool was subjected to user testing by 27 third year graduate students at the Faculty of Information Studies, MARA Institute of Technology, Shah Alam, Malaysia. The students were divided into two groups. The control group was asked to provide bibliographic descriptions to nine types of conference proceedings using the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules second revised edition manual. The experimental group was asked to undertake similar tasks by using CoPAS. The results indicated that the experimental group performed significantly better in seven out of the nine types of conference proceedings (p<0.05). When total scores were compared, the experimental group performed significantly better (p<0.01). The results also indicate that text knowledge can be reinforced with the use of a computer assisted system, allowing students to perform significantly better in specific cataloguing tasks. Students with longer experience in computer use found it easier to master the use of the system as well as comprehend the content and flow of information presented
