ISSN 1675-3925 AffiliationsUniversity of Malaya, Dept. of Social Administration and Justice AbstractMenurut International Labour Organisation (I.L.0) (1992), keselamatan sosial ditakrifkan sebagai "The protection which society provide for its members through a series of public measures against the economic and social distress that other would be caused by stoppage or substantial reduction of earning resulting from sickness, maternity, employment injury, unemployment, invalidity, old age, death and provision of medical care and subsidies for familiy with children." (halaman 4)Secara umumnya keselamatan sosial ini dapat difahami sebagai kaedah bagi melindungi masyarakat daripada kemelaratan hidup akibat kehilangan punca pendapatan. Matlamat pelaksanaannya menurut I.L.O. (1968) adalah 'the security furnished by society to its members through a set of organized measures, to prevent the occurence of certain contigencies involving loss or substancial reduction of income or extra expenses for medical treatment, and to provide financial guarantee against the economic consequence of these contigencies when they do occur, and also to provide benefit for the maintenance of the children.'
