AffiliationsUniversity of Malaya, Faculty of Computer Science & Information Technology, MLIS Programme AbstractThe compilation of this bibliography began when Professor Dato' Asmah Haji Omar, Director of the Language Center, University of Malaya expressed her willingness to give a talk on Malay dictionaries in january 1987 in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the National Collection Division, University of Malaya Library. The initial objective was to compile a holding list of all Malay/Indonesian vocabularies and dictionaries held in the library. However, because of the vast collection of Malay /Indonesian dictionaries, the coverage was scoped wider. This bibliography attempts to give a broad picture of the state of the art of Malay / Indonesian dictionary publications and documentation, with emphasis on those which are available in Malaysia. The bibliography is mainly based on those found at the National Collection Division, University of Malaya Library in view of the fact that it claims to be one of the oldest academic libraries in Malaysia. Each dictionary/vocabulary has been examined and annotated. The collections from the National Library of Malaysia and the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka library was also searched. Entries have been collected up to the month of April 1990. The bibliography lists 1910 dictionaries / vocabularies and is divided into 8 main sections. Section 1 lists 73 titles of dictionaries available in manuscripts. Section 2 lists 106 Monolingual Malay / Indonesian dictionaries found in the three libraries. Each title is given a location status. Section 3 lists 541 bilingual and polyglotal dictionaries and vocabularies. Entries in this section is arranged by languages. A substantial number of English-Malay/Indonesian dictionaries is listed under this section. Section 4 lists dictionaries under broad subject areas, Languages and literature, Social sciences and humanities, and the Sciences and Technology. This section contain 422 entries all of which are unique titles. Section 5 lists studies and writings about Malay dictionaries and vocabularies found in the form of books, periodical articles and papers presented at conferences. About 495 entries are listed here. Section 6 lists writings about Malay dictionaries and vocabularies found in local newspapers from 1983 to 1990. Section 7 list titles that have been located after the compilation of titles have been numbered for publications. Section 8 provides a chronoligical listing of all titles.
