Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities AbstractThe Smart school education programme is a systematically designed programme that integrates teaching and learning with IT applications, which include computer based teaching and web-based learning. The innovative concept was conceived in 1997 and implemented in January 1999. The overarching educational objective of this innovation is to prepare students for life in the Information Age. More specifically, Smart School teaching-learning principles and practices aim to develop and produce future generations who are technologically literate, who can think critically and creatively and are able to manage and apply knowledge effectively as well as innovatively. To function effectively, the Smart School programme requires appropriately skilled teaching staff and well designed supporting processes including technological infrastructure. At the onset of its implementation, the programme identified four subjects(English, Bahasa Melayu, Science and Mathematics) to be taught the smart-way. A study was conducted to investigate the teaching-learning practices of this approach and the teachers’ and students’
perceptions of their effectiveness on the teaching and learning of English language in particular. This paper presents research findings from the aforementioned research. These findings will show the teachers’and students’ perceptions of the effectiveness and the degree of their readiness in embracing the innovation. The paper concludes by highlighting pertinent aspects in the concept of Smart School education that need to be re-examined and revamped, namely matters pertaining to teacher training, IT
infrastructure, and curriculum design, so as to ensure that the innovation can successfully breed or nurture a workforce prepared to meet the challenges of the ICT era. | Item Type: | Journal |
