Abstract

The advancement of technology has made it possible for the learning of second language using CALL. In support of Information Communications Technology (ICT) in the country, the Ministry of Education in Malaysia has provided both hardware and teaching courseware to all government schools to assist teachers in the teaching and learning process. English textbooks that come with a CD-Rom, known as MYCD, have been tailor-made to meet the students’ needs. This interactive courseware covers the four essential language skills that is the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, and this is designed to allow students to develop self-directed learning. Students are also given access to word processing software and the Internet in schools. This research seeks to gauge the effectiveness of these courseware, as well as general word processing programs and web-based activities, in fostering autonomous learning among students from a few schools in Penang. The students’ attitudes and preferences for using CALL in language learning are also investigated. This paper will report the findings of the degree of autonomy as well as the teachers’ role in facilitating learner autonomy using the method of sampling survey, frequency and cross tabulation analysis . This research indicates that the efficacy of CALL in fostering autonomous learning is very dependant on teacher involvement and the characteristics of the learning software.
