Abstract

Manual wheelchair is a complex system and inappropriate its designs can limit freedom and accessibility. There has been a little changed in the design of the manual wheelchairs few years back, especially in allowing users to transfer easily. This paper presents preliminary research of transfer problem among individuals or elderly who use manual wheelchairs to move. To overcome such problem, the use of integrated method or Pugh’s approach to develop and improve wheelchair design need to be implemented. This paper describes the steps in the design process which uses integrated methods such as identify customer needs, product design specification, conceptual design and detailed design. A manual elevating seat was proposed with the concept of a pneumatic as a mechanism to raise or lower a seat in order to offer wheelchair users more independently in daily activities and improve them physically.
