Faculty of Education AbstractThe main objective of the study was to examine the relationship between adolescents perception of the future and the perception of their peers towards the future peers. Secondly, it examined whether there were differences in the adolescents’ perceptions of the future according to race, age, form, gender and location of schools. The sample of the study involved six secondary schools in West Malaysia involving 1068 students ranging from form one to form six. The questionaire used in the study was adapted from the Adolescent’s Future Perceptions Index (Seltzer & Waterman 1996). The data was collected by distributing the API to the samples of the study with the cooperation of the form teachers. The data were analyzed and processed by using the SPSS-X. Eleven construct items were tabulated for analysis which included position of the adolescents with regards to adulthood, clarity of the adolsecence with regards to their future plans, distance from achieving their goals, support received from society, smoothness of entering adulthood, age of entering adulthood, desire to become adults, number of peer groups, need for experience, source of support. The results of the Pearson correlation tests showed that significant relationships exist between the adolescents’ perceptions of their future and that of their peers in all the eleven items. The study concluded that adolescents have a close relationship with their peers since their perception of the future was to a great extent influenced by their peers. It is imperative that parents recognize the roles of peer groups and that schools generate concrete programmes to build the role of peer groups constructively. It is recommended that future studies examine the adolescents’ perceptions through a qualitative approach.
| Item Type: | Journal |
