It is tentatively hypothesized in the present research that there exists a positive relationship between extrinsic motivation and the students’ performance while intrinsic motivation would feature less prominently in the students’ learning agendas. The participants in this study were 74 Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) first-year students who had been learning the Russian language for two semesters. The respondents were given questionnaires and asked to indicate their agreement/disagreement with the statements. There were also some open-ended questions. Factor analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, and contents analysis were used to analyse the students’ responses. The main finding of this study is that intrinsically motivated students tended to perform better than their extrinsically motivated peers. This finding supports the validity of the view that teachers and instructors should foster intrinsic motivation in their students. Repository Staff Only: item control page
