Abstract

Numerical mapping of DNA sequences to form DNA walks have revealed the existence of periodicities, short/long-range correlations and multifractal mosaic structures that are characteristics of coding and noncoding regions. Exploiting these properties, we performed sequence segmentation using a class of Wigner-Ville distributions. Analysis on DNA sequences of retrovirus showed the occurrence of organized patterns in the spatial frequency distribution, which roughly correspond to the coding regions in genes. Spatial resolution of the distribution is found to be considerably improved upon introducing the smoothing operation in the time-frequency distribution. In addition, the mapping rules used to construct the DNA walk also affect the visibility of these patterns.
