Abstract

The concentration of radium, a naturally occurring radionuclide, in Malaysian granite was analysed using a hyper-pure germanium-gamma spectrometer. The results show that Cretaceous granites from southern part of Peninsula has lower radium concentration compared to Triassic granites from the Western Belt of Peninsular Malaysia. The mean concentrations of Ra-226 and Ra-228 in peninsular granites are 0.20 Bq/g and 0.16 Bq/g respectively. Absorbed dose rate from granite was estimated to be 190 nGy/h with a maximum value of 490 nGy/h.
