Prejudice is a negative attitude that creates tension among ethnic groups. In Malaysia, prejudice once created a race riot in 1969. From histoy, the inharmony and fragile relationship among ethnic groups was portrayed in Malay literature since the 1920s till the 1970s. The fragile relationship was the consequence of the policy of divide and rule implemented by the British administration in Malaya. Two issues were recognized as ethnic prejudice between Malays and non-Malay towards Malay literature, namely concept of national literature and Malay-centric portrayal in Malay literature. This article suggests that the translated ethnic literature should be accepted as part of the national literature, the Malay authors are suggested to broaden their writing world about multi-ethnic society in Malaysia, and hence educational institutions play a very important role informing the culture of respect besides dismantling prejudice among the students in schools.
