Abstract

This article suggests that emotional intelligence of school leadership plays a central role in school improvement and effectiveness. Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and manage emotions in the self, teachers, staff and students. Four major aspects of emotional intelligence, namely appraisal and expression of emotion, the use of emotion to enhance cognitive process and decision making, knowledge about emotions, and management of emotions are described. This article also discusses how emotional intelligence contributes to school effectiveness by focusing on elements of school leadership: emotional intelligence; development of collective goals; instilling an appreciation of the importance of work activities; generating and maintaining enthusiasm, confidence, optimism, cooperation and trust; encouraging flexibility in decision making, and, establishing and maintaining a meaningful school identity.
