Dept. of English Language. AbstractThe ability to read with efficiency is an important skill in this era of globalization. However, a large number of students at various levels of studies are still unable to read effectively because they use unsuitable reading techniques. As an example, a large number of university students read at a speed of less than 130 words per minute. This situation occurs because they lack suitable reading technique and strategy which is suited to their objective of reading. This has resulted in learning problems and raise the question of how they can read books, journals and text from the huge amount of electronic media and at the same time are able to evaluate the resources read. The problems could be handled by setting up collaboration between universities, schools and the community so that the problem in reading does not continue until it poses a hindrance to achieving the national vision.
Kebolehan membaca dengan efisien merupakan suatu kemahiran yang sangat penting di dalam era globalisasi ini. Walau bagaimanapun, masih ramai pelajar di semua peringkat pengajian tidak mampu membaca secara berkesan kerana menggunakan teknik membaca yang tidak sesuai. Sebagai contoh, masih ramai pelajar universiti membaca pada kadar kelajuan kurang daripada 130 patah perkataan seminit. Perkara ini berlaku kerana mereka tidak mempunyai teknik dan strategi membaca yang bersesuaian dengan tujuan pembacaan dan akibatnya adalah masalah pembelajaran seperti bagaimanakah mereka dapat membaca buku, jurnal dan teks dari media elektronik yang bertimbun dan menilai bahan-bahan tersebut dengan sempurna. Masalah ini boleh ditangani dengan mengadakan kolaborasi di antara universiti, sekolah dan komuniti supaya masalah membaca tidak berterusan sehingga boleh menjejaskan pencapaian wawasan negara.
