Malay Literature became a new subject in school in 1957, soon after independence. However, the curriculum of Malay Literature was established only in 1984. The Education Philosophy of Malay Literature was introduced in 2002. Hence, many problems arose as a consequence of the gradual development of Malay Literature in all levels of government educational institutions. The problems included lack of a Malay Literature Educational Policy, the wide coverage of the Malay Literature syllabus, unsuitability of the text books, limitations of teaching approaches, teachers’ lack of expertise, and decline of results from year to year. This article offers some suggestions in order to enchance the position of Malay Literature both in the education system and society.
