Abstract

This article raises an issue pertaining to the lack of group counseling practice as a means of solving problems in the Malaysian context. The article also discusses several possible reasons in using and conducting effective group counseling for problem solving. Firstly, it highlights the definition and group counseling’s goals. Secondly, it elaborates the reasons in using effective group counseling for problem solving. These are: to allow members to share their experiences, elicit a sense of belongingness among each other; have an opportunity to practise among members; accept varied feedback; and stimulate vicarious learning. Thirdly, it discusses the potential factors contributing to the lack of group counseling practice in Malaysia. Lastly, it discusses a proposed model in conducting effective group counseling for problem solving in school setting.
