Civics and Citizenship Education was reintroduced as a compulsory subject into the Malaysian school system (KBSR and KBSM) in 2005. This was because it has become increasingly important for schools to educate the young generation to be active and participating citizens in this 21st century. The lack of interest and commitment in teaching and learning of civics that led to the failure of the subject in the 1970s needed to be overcome if the recent reintroduction of the subject is to succeed. Hence, teachers need to use active and interactive approaches in the teaching and learning of Civics and Citizenship Education. This article discusses the new KBSR and KBSM Civics and Citizenship Education subject and various active and interactive teaching and learning strategies that teachers can use to create an effective classroom environment for meaningful learning of the subject. Some classroom activities suited to the KBSR and KBSM syllabi are also suggested.
