Abstract

Communication skill is an important factor influencing the effectiveness of school principals as leaders in their schools. Effective leaders are both popular and productive. They empower their staff without overpowering them. Staff empowerment is an important responsibility of a leader while staff attitude in the school very much reflects the principal's leadership. This can be observed through four dimensions in staff attitude: positive and significant personal change; continuous increase of self-efficacy; staff cohesiveness; and, the element of fun and enjoyment in discharging duties and responsibilities. Communication skills and especially counseling skills are facilitative and enable leaders to empower their staff. The relevance of counseling skills in school principal leadership is the focus of this article. The related counseling skills and their application are also discussed.
