Student assessment is an integral part of instruction at any level of education. In early childhood education, it is argued that student assessment should be done authentically and should rely less on the traditional paper and pencil testing mode. This paper argues for the use of authentic assessment in the early childhood education setting and expands on the theme by illustrating the use of the portfolio as a form of authentic assessment.
