In Malaysia, the existence of small schools reflects the strategy to ensure democratization of education. For decades, small schools have been associated with the deprived groups left out of mainstream education. This paper discusses the issues and realities associated with small schools in rural areas of Malaysia from the social, economic and cultural perspectives. It analyzes data from the Education Management Information System (EMIS) of Malaysia as well as studies done on the small school phenomenon in Malaysia and other countries. The authors suggest that policy interventions are required to ensure structural changes for resolving existing problems in small schools and achieving national education objectives. From the perspective of philosophy and theory, the ability of the educational system to deliver quality education to these small schools would help alleviate social reproduction and prevent inheritance of the culture of poverty among disadvantaged groups.
