The purpose of this article is to evaluate the history and principle in the teaching of Malay language as a national and official language of Malaysia. The first part of this article discusses background of Malaysian population in relation to the differences of language used in the country. Then it discusses the policy and implementation of making Malay language as the medium of instruction in various level of education. Finally, the discussion focused on the basic principle of the teaching of Malay language in school and the role of teacher in implementing Malay language curriculum in the classroom.
