Abstract

Spousal relationship has a great influence on couples’ marital happiness. The quality of spousal relationship hinges on the couples’ ability to recognize and fulfill one another's needs. This study was conducted to identify the top five needs of Malaysian spouses according to gender and race. The adapted version of Harley’s (2002) instrument on spousal needs was used in this study involving 129 married males and 127 married females. Mean ranked scores were used to identify the top five needs of each category. Overall, Religiosity was found to be the top most need, followed by Commitment. Honesty, Love and Conversation. The husbands’ and wives’ needs according to race were also identified and discussed.
