Abstract

This study is aimed at gaining a better understanding of the reading metacognitive awareness (RMA) among secondary school students. The instrument used measured the degree of RMA and consisted of four components: conditional knowledge, planning, regulation and evaluation. The study was carried out among 317 Form Five students from five schools. Data was collected based on the Index of Reading Awareness (IRA). This Index comprised 20 items appraising the level of RMA. The study findings reveal that most students were low in RMA. Hence they have to be taught the skill of RMA before they can use proper reading comprehension strategies on reading materials.
