Abstract

Technological advancement is not the only determining factor of the development of Malaysia in the 21st century; the well-being of human capital is just as important. Adolescents who are physically and psychologically healthy are an invaluable national asset. Hence this exploratory study was conducted on 142 adolescents (17-year-olds). The study was aimed at determining their level of psychological wellbeing, identifying the adolescents who were psychologically healthy or otherwise, and examining the influence of subjects’ background on their psychological well-being using the Ryff Psychological Well-being Scale (1989). Background factors considered were gender, race, education level and location of residence. The findings showed that only 21.6% of the adolescents had good psychological well-being. Educational level was found to be the significant predictor of adolescent well-being. Ways of enhancing adolescent psychological well-being were also discussed.
