Abstract

Society expects school students to dedicate their time and attention primarily to education and learning; however, there are school students who work part-time, that is, after school hours and during school holidays. The school students have various reasons for doing so. This article highlights some findings of a survey concerning the involvement of secondary school students with part-time work. As many as 200 students from 13 secondary schools in Kuala Lumpur took part in the survey. School counselors identified and requested the students concerned to participate in the survey. From the survey, it was found that three main factors induced students to work part-time, namely: (i) to gain work experience; (ii) to earn income; and (iii) peer influence. The study found that even though they worked part-time, the students concerned had high aspirations to excel in their studies and to have a better career in the future.
