This study focuses on the implementation and challenges faced in the teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics in English (or PPSMI) in Malaysian schools. Based on the results, response to the program is very encouraging. In primary and secondary schools, the teachers involved in teaching both subjects gave positive responses to this program (79% or 95 out of 120 respondents). Furthermore, according to the teachers‘ perception, students react positively especially in primary schools compared to secondary schools. This was attributed to the primary school students’ early exposure to Science in English, hence their familiarity with scientific terms in the target language. The study also shows that it is easier for the Mathematics teachers to teach in English compared to Science teachers. The students also understood Mathematics in English better than they understood Science. Regarding the English For Teaching Mathematics And Science (ETeMS) training course, 93% of the teachers in the study agree that it should continue as it facilitates their teaching process. Lastly, analysis on Science and Mathematics examinations conducted in rural and urban schools, before and after the PPSMI program, shows an improvement especially in Mathematics achievement after PPSMI implementation.
