Abstract

This study examines the support, infrastructure, commitment and enrichment activities provided by parents in helping their children to learn science and mathematics in English and the association between parental commitments with parents’ socioeconomic status. The sample consisted of 555 parents who were administered the Parent Questionnaire. The findings revealed that 87% of the parents provide materials in terms of books to their children; but less support was given to buy magazines, educational VCDs, computational software, and games. In addition, parents also provided infrastructure, commitment and enrichment activities to their children. The findings also showed that parental commitment is associated with parental sosioeconomic status. These findings suggest that parents are involved in supporting their children in learning mathematics and science In English and also reveal that parents from different socioeconomic background show different levels of commitment.
