A central issue in the design of a knowledge based system (kbs) is the nature, quality and quantity of knowledge represented in the system. This paper analyses and characterizes the types of knowledge represented and used in extant medical diagnostic kbs. The analyses relate the capabilities and problem solving abilities of a kbs to its knowledge types. In addition the relative merits and inefficacies of the various knowledge types are also discussed.
