Abstract

This work describes the synthesis and characterization of copolymer of N- [4- N′-(Benzyl amino-carbonyl) phenyl] maleimide (N-BACPMI) with methyl metha crylate(MMA). The free radical copolymerization was carried out with Azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator in Tetrahydrofuran (THF) at 65°C. Nine copolymer samples were prepared from different feed ratios of comonomer. The copolymer composition has been determined by N-elemental analysis. The monomer reactivity ratios were determined as r1=0.18 and r2=0.72 by Finemann Ross method. The copolymers were characterized by solubility, intrinsic viscosity, density, FT-IR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The intrinsic viscosity of copolymer was 0.196 dl/g and density was 0.8662 g/cm3. The molecular weight was determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and average molecular weight of copolymer is 19063 g/mol. The thermal properties of copolymer were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The initial decomposition temperature of copolymer was 235 ºC.
