Abstract

Plagiarism is one of the crimes committed in tertiary education institutions and it destroys the academic integrity among academicians. Plagiarism will hinder the materialization of the academic community objective in developing the students’ intellectuality and ethics. Thus, this study is important to survey the university students’ perception regarding the plagiarism practice. This study examined the UTM students’ perception on plagiarism. The objective of this study is to recognize tendency of plagiarism engaged by the students and to know their views regarding the plagiarism practice. This study is a survey research whilst the method and data used are quantitative involving 710 respondents comprising of UTM Skudai students who registered in ULT 3042 in the first semester of 2003/04 session have been selected as the research sample. A set of questionnaire based on the McCabe Academic Integrity Survey (M-AIS) had been had been replied. The result of this study is that the frequency of the plagiarism committed by the UTM students is low and there is a variety of perceptions on the nine behaviors proposed.

Plagiarisme merupakan salah satu “jenayah” yang kerap berlaku di institusi pengajian tinggi dan menjejaskan integriti akademik. Matlamat mewujudkan komuniti akademik, iaitu pembangunan dari aspek intelektual dan etika akan terbantut dengan wujudnya gejala plagiarisme. Oleh itu, kajian ini penting untuk meninjau persepsi pelajar tentang amalan yang dianggap sebagai plagiat. Kajian ini bertujuan untuk mengenal pasti kekerapan pelajar melakukan amalan yang dianggap sebagai plagiat dan mengetahui anggapan pelajar tentang amalan plagiat. Kaedah serta data yang digunakan adalah bersifat kuantitatif melibatkan 710 orang responden pelajar UTM Kampus Skudai aliran perdana yang mendaftar mata pelajaran ULT 3042 pada semester I sesi 2003/04. Satu set soal selidik yang bersumberkan McCabe Academic Integrity Survey (M-AIS) telah diedarkan dan sebanyak 341 set soal selidik telah dikembalikan. Dapatan kajian ini mendapati bahawa kekerapan pelajar UTM melakukan plagiat adalah rendah dan terdapat kepelbagaian persepsi terhadap sembilan tingkah laku yang dikemukakan.
