Abstract

Historical empathy is one of the important elements in teaching and learning history as documented in the History curriculum used in this country. The aims of this article are to explain the meaning of historical empathy and also to discuss the implications towards teaching and learning in the classroom. The discussion will start with the definition and etymology of the term ''empathy'', then historical empathy, including the controversies related to the concept. The article will then proceed with an elaboration on the place of historical empathy in the History syllabus of the Integrated Secondary School Curriculum. The following section will explain the importance of historical empathy, the characteristic of historical, and the steps to encourage historical empathy in teaching and learning.

Kepentingan empati sejarah sebagai salah satu unsur penting dalam pengajaran dan pembelajaran sejarah termaktub dalam dokumen kurikulum Sejarah yang digunakan di Malaysia. Artikel ini bertujuan menjelaskan maksud empati sejarah dan seterusnya membincangkan implikasinya terhadap pengajaran dan pembelajaran di bilik darjah. Perbincangan akan dimulakan dengan definisi dan etimologi istilah empati dan seterusnya empati sejarah, termasuk kontroversi yang timbul tentangnya. Seterusnya, kedudukan empati sejarah dalam kurikulum Sejarah Kurikulum Bersepadu Sekolah Menengah dihuraikan. Bahagian yang seterusnya akan menghuraikan pula kepentingan empati sejarah, ciri-ciri empati sejarah, dan langkah-langkah menggalakkan empati sejarah dalam pengajaran dan pembelajaran.
