Abstract

Generally, direction and changes of science education in Malaysia is painted not merely by national socio political changes, but also being influenced by current global changes. Such scenarios generate changes in terms of generic skills required by teachers in effectively conducting their science teaching and learning rituals as envisaged in the science education curriculum. Thus, study to determine perceived science teachers’ needs must be conducted so that subsequent follow up actions to overcome gaps in science teachers’ needs can be systematically planned. Analysis of local as well as international literature on science teachers’ needs reveals that the main methodology used is survey method by means of questionnaire. In most of the studies, science teachers will pose their feedback on each item based on their own personal perception. This study will discuss procedures undertaken in producing instrument to determine science teachers’ needs. In doing so, discussion will focus on issues and procedures of how the validity and reliability of the instrument are established by employing the factor analysis and internal consistency (Cronbach Alpha) approaches. Discussion ends with the potential use of the instrument in studies on science teachers’ needs. Undoubtedly, the uniqueness of the instrument is not merely rely on the validity and reliability per se, but will also depends on the creativity of the researchers as well as how the evidences generated from the study being integrated within the context of the research design used. To say the least, the uniqueness of the instrument will be significant when the findings successfully bring about significant impact towards the development of science education in general.

Umumnya, hala tuju pendidikan sains di Malaysia dicorakkan bukan hanya oleh perubahan sosiopolitik tempatan, tetapi turut dipengaruhi oleh perubahan semasa global. Senario demikian menyebabkan berlakunya perubahan kemahiran-kemahiran generik yang diperlukan oleh guru-guru dalam melaksanakan rutin dan ritual pengajaran dan pembelajaran sains sepertimana yang digagaskan dalam kurikulum pendidikan sains. Oleh itu, kajian bagi menjejaki tanggapan keperluan guru-guru sains perlu sentiasa dilakukan agar tindakan susulan untuk menampung lompang keperluan guru-guru sains sentiasa dapat dirancang secara sistematik dan berkesan. Analisis koleksi literatur yang berkaitan dengan tanggapan keperluan guru-guru sains sama ada di dalam atau luar negara mendedahkan bahawa metodologi utama yang digunakan adalah berbentuk tinjauan dengan menggunakan soal selidik sebagai instrumen utama penjanaan data. Dalam kebanyakan kajian yang ditinjau, guru-guru sains akan memberikan maklum balas kepada setiap item mengikut keperluan kendiri berdasarkan pernyataan tanggapan keperluan yang dikemukakan. Kajian ini akan membincangkan langkah-langkah yang telah diguna pakai dalam penghasilan instrumen bagi mengenal pasti tanggapan keperluan guru-guru sains. Dalam menjayakannya, perbincangan akan tertumpu kepada isu serta prosedur bagaimana kesahan dan kebolehpercayaan instrumen tersebut dibina menerusi pendekatan analisis faktor dan keseragaman dalaman melalui Cronbach Alpha. Perbincangan berakhir dengan isu potensi penggunaan instrumen dalam kajian-kajian mengenal pasti tanggapan keperluan guru-guru sains. Tidak dinafikan, keunikan sesuatu instrumen bukan hanya terletak pada isu kesahan dan kebolehpercayaannya semata-mata, malah turut bergantung pada kreativiti penyelidik serta bagaimana bukti-bukti ini dapat diintegrasikan dalam konteks reka bentuk kajian. Yang pasti ialah keunikan sesuatu instrumen tersebut akan terserlah apabila kajian berjaya menghasilkan dapatan yang mampu membawa impak terhadap perkembangan pendidikan sains amnya.
