Abstract

This study evaluates the effect of maternal age, birth weight and infant sex on two main UCB parameters for use and long-term cryopreservation: TNC and volume. Data from 1000 UCB units were collected and analyzed in this study. The results indicate that TNC is correlated to infant birth weight and sex but not maternal age at delivery. Volume is only correlated to birth weight but not maternal age and infant sex.

Item Type:Journal
Additional Information:In conclusion, our data indicate that TNC count and volume of UCB collected is correlated to infant birth weight. Female infant generally has higher TNC count compared to its male counterpart that has the same birth weight. Maternal age is not correlated to TNC count and volume. This study is the first of its kind conducted by a private stem cell bank in Malaysia. More research needs to be conducted for other biological factors affecting UCB parameters.
