Abstract

The publication in 1972 of William Roff's Bibliography of Malay and Arabic Periodicals in the Stratits Settlemens and Peninsular Malay States, 1876-1941, has provided an important bibliographical tool. In this book, Roff provides descriptions and locations for early Malay periodicals and gave valuable commentary and several indexes. Roff had not fully exploited relevant information in the Government Gazettes of the Straits Settlements and Federated Malay States. Under the terms of the Registration of Books Ordinance 1886 (Later the Printers and Publishers Ordinance) printers were required to register their publications with the Colonial Secretary's Office and ceposit three copies of each publication. This ordinance apply to periodicals as well as monographs. A list of over 197 Malay and Arabic periodicals found in the Gazette is appended.
