Abstract

Thomas John Newbold (1807-1850) was an officer in the 23 Regiment, Madras Light Infantry, in Malacca between 1832 and 1835. In Malacca he collected a number of Malay manuscripts. When returned to Madras he donated his collection to the Madras Literary Society and Auxiliary of the Royal Asiatic Society. This manuscript collection covers works on Malay historiography such as Sejarah Melayu, Adat Aceh, Hikayat Patani, Tajus-Salatin, Hikaya Isma Yatim, Hikayat Hang Tuah and other unique and priceless titles.
