Abstract

Early children's literature is an important tool to expand children's imagination and interest in learning. In this context, parents and teachers have their role in sowing interest among the children in knowledge gaining through literature. However, problems are faced by Malaysian children as a consequence of the low standard of Malay children's literature. This article discusses the usage of reading technique in teaching children literature by parents and teachers either at home or in preschool. At home, parents should make reading story books to children a daily routine; meanwhile teachers in school should hold additional activities to maintain and enhance the interest in reading habit among the children for the long term. Besides that, the Malay children's literature books published in Malaysia are found not interesting because the above literature are set from the adult point of view. Henceforth, publishers should publish the good and quality children's literature based on the children's needs.
