Abstract

This cross-sectional study was done in the Gynaecology Wards of the Kuala Lumpur Hospital fortwo weeks from 7 June to 22 June 1994. The objective was to find the prevalence of depressivesymptoms among patients who experienced abortion and to determine associated factors such as age,parity, gravida, employment, education level, history of previous abortion, social support, life eventand attitude towards pregnancy. A sample of 80 respondents 22.7% of the total admission to thewards during the study period) was studied. When the Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HAD)Scale was used, 9 respondents (1 l .3% ofthe sample) were shown to have had significant mean scoresof depressive symptoms. Post-abortion women, aged below 35 years, childless, employed, havingplanned pregnancy, with a low level of formal education, and without social support, were found tobe having increased mean scores of depression. Respondents without social support were found tobe more depressed than those with similar support (t = -1.67, p < 0.05).
