Abstract

The article reports on the electrophoretic charge measurements E coli in various solutions in order to infer the origins of this charge. Measurements with/without washing indicate that there may be some extended structures on the bacterial surface, while those with a prior heat treatment suggest active processes to be responsible for some of the charge. Other measurements yield the extent of absorption and the amount of protein on the cell surface.
