ISSN 0121-8126 AffiliationsUniversiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia AbstractDetermination of interception loss was carried out by measuring throughfall and stemflow at selected experimental plot in Pangkor Hill Reserved Forest (PHRF), Pangkor Island. 19 gross precipitation events were recorded over one month period between 12 November and 13 December 2005. These events amounting 388.9 mm ranged between 71.5 mm (18.3 %) and 1.7 mm (0.44 %). Throughfall and stemflow were recorded at 79.3 % and 3.54 % of the gross precipitation, respectively. These resulted in interception loss of 23.9% of the total rainfall. Seven different tree species were selected subject to stemflow analysis. The species density vary from 0.04 (Kapur and Keruing) to 0.32 (Palm-Pinang). The redistribution of water within the canopy and flowing to the stem were highly related to the leaf structure with Pinang trees accumulate more waters in the container (2.54 mm). This study concludes that the present of PHRF plays a vital role in balancing the proportion of rainfall-runoff within the island catchment. | Item Type: | Journal |
