Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop an environmental concern index for Malaysia. Districts (Klang for urban; and Kuala Langat for rural), and housing areas/villages have randomly been identified in Selangor. Respondents were selected to represent the ethnic groups by ratio of 5:3:2 for Bumiputera, Chinese and Indian. Questionnaire was used as an instrument for data collection. Data reduction technique factor analysis was applied to four elements of environmental concern i.e., attitude towards environment, knowledge on environment, attributes considered when purchasing products, and environmental practices. The findings of the study revealed that the original categories identified as important elements in developing the index have changed. Even though originally attitude, knowledge, attributes of products and practices are important to the index, factor analysis showed that only two out of these four elements studied i.e., knowledge and attributes of products seems to provide more information (80%). Thus for the development of the environmental concern index for Malaysia, these two elements should be primarily included and more important compared to attitude and practices. For future research, it is suggested that respondents are selected from different socio-economy and socio-demography backgrounds. The comparison of scores using an index and without using an index should be carried out.
