Abstract

Preliminary analysis done on previous grades obtained by IT students in FTMSK (UiTM) shows that programming grades are on declined. Lecturers from the faculty claim that students’ attitude contributed to this alarming phenomenon. The need to study the students’ attitude towards programming is crucial in order to develop their programming skills. This research has developed an instrument to measure students’ attitude towards computer programming. The tool is being utilized by the faculty; in order to produce IT graduates with the necessary programming skills. Questionnaire is used to develop the instrument and to collect the data. The questionnaire consists of a series of positive and negative statements. Using the Likert scale, students are asked to these statements ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree. The question comes from three main component of attitude: confidence, importance and liking. The data was collected from students, who are taking various degree program offered by the faculty of information technology and quantitative sciences (FTMSK), UiTM. The reliability of the new instrument was evaluated for internal consistency of the subscales with the responses from 126 students in the faculty. The findings show that the students have more positive attitudes towards computer programming compared with negatives attitudes. The development of this tool will measure the students’ learning attitude towards programming and the results will serve as an input for the faculty in order to bring up the grades for programming subjects in UiTM.
