Abstract

The paper will discuss what is the level of awareness among youth regarding the importance of savings and what are the factors that will influence their savings habit. This research provides a significant result that mere awareness does not motivate savings among public universities students. Among those who saved, second year and also male respondents represent the highest group in saving amount with majority prefer to save in the banks and public trust fund. The saving behaviour was influenced and encouraged by the parents and past experience. Most of the respondents rarely prepare and follow their personal financial budget. Buying books and furthering education were the main reasons for saving, while high cost of living being the main reason given for not saving. The study provides evidence that the amount of saving was significantly influenced by age, race, amount of total income and awareness of saving which was consistent with previous studies (Johnson, P.J., 1999 and Md. Nor, et. al, 2002).
