Jabatan Pendidikan Islam dan Moral, AbstractThis study was conducted among 320 form four students from ten selected national secondary schools in Terengganu. They are Malay Muslim students male and female of Science and Arts streams from various social backgrounds. The main purpose of this study is to find out the overall Quranic recitation ability of the students and the standard of their reading based on the rules of Quranic recitation. The research is also to investigate whether there is any difference in the ability level of Quranic recitation among the researched students as viewed from their streams, sex, school location and socio economy status. Apart from that, the research also attempts at searching the relationship between the ability to read jawi (Malay Arabic transcript) with the ability to recite Quranic among. Two instruments are employed to test the ability to read jawi and ability to recite the Qur’an. The data collected were statistically analysed using SPSS (Statistical Package For Social Science) version 11.5. T-Test, Anova and correlation analysis were used to interpret the data and to prove the hypotheses. The analysis discovers problems and weaknesses in the ability to recite the Qur’an among the students: 0.6% are at poor level while 38.1% at very poor level. The subjects’ ability to recite the Qur’an is satisfactory. The study discovers that there are relationship between the difficulties and differences in reciting the Qur’an and the subjects’ sex, school location and socio-economic status, however, there are no relationships between the difficulties and differences and the students’ streams. Meanwhile, the correlation test shows that there are positive relationship between the ability to read jawi and the ability to recite the Qur’an. A general conclusion can be drawn that the students’ ability to apply the rules of Quranic recitation is merely satisfactory. This indicates that the students’ ability in Quranic recitation does not come to a required good standard. This problem needs attention and proper action from the relevant authorities as weaknesses in reading the Quranic would result in failure in Islamic subjectsas a whole.
