Abstract

This study examined problems faced by students from poor families in the state of Selangor, especially in the district of Sabak Bernam. Forty-two students in Form 5 were selected as participants for this study. These group is made up of 19 students who stay in three community areas named Desa Kasih provided by the Pusat Zakat Selangor, and 23 who stayed outside of the community. Focus group interview was used to collect data. Results showed that students in this study exhibit healthy aspirations and positive values eventhough they faced financial constrains. The most obvious challenge for them in fulfilling their aspirations is their lifestyle, which is reflected by excessive TV watching, aimless conversations, and very little time allocated for revision, homework, or reading academic, spiritual, and general knowledge.


Kajian ini adalah satu tinjauan yang bertujuan untuk mengkaji permasalahan yang dihadapi oleh pelajar-pelajar dari golongan fakir miskin di negeri Selangor, khususnya di daerah Sabak Bernam. Seramai 42 orang pelajar Tingkatan 5 telah dipilih dalam kajian ini. Pelajar-pelajar ini terdiri daripada 19 pelajar yang tinggal di tiga buah Desa Kasih Pusat Zakat Selangor dan 23 orang pelajar yang tinggal di luar Desa Kasih. Kajian ini menggunakan temubual berfokus untuk mendapatkan data-data daripada responden kajian. Data-data temubual tersebut telah dianalisa secara kualitatif. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan pelajar-peljar fakir miskin dalam kajian ini mempamerkan aspirasi yang sihat, serta nilai yang positif walaupun mereka menghadapi masalah kewangan. Aspek yang ketara menjadi penghalang kepada aspirasi pelajar¬pelajar miskin ini adalah caragaya hidup mereka seperti menonton televisyen secara berlebihan, berbual kosong, peruntukan masa yang sangat sedikit bagi mengulangkaji, menyiapkan kerja rumah, ataupun membaca bacaan berunsur akademik, kerohanian, dan pengetahuan am.
